San Juan de Ulua is a fortress located in the port city of Veracruz, Mexico. It was built in the 16th century by Spanish colonizers to protect the city from pirates and foreign invasions. Today, the fortress is a museum and a historical site, attracting both tourists and history buffs. The fortress has been witness to many significant events in Mexican history, including the arrival of the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes in 1519, the battle of Veracruz during the Mexican-American War, and the imprisonment of Mexican political prisoners during the Porfirio Diaz regime. The fortress sits on an island and can only be reached by boat. It features a moat, drawbridge, cannons, and lookout towers, among other features. San Juan de Ulua is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a symbol of Mexico's rich cultural heritage.
